- INSTALL Instructions
- --------------------
-
- You must use uncompress to unpack this distribution.
-
- xmcd-cddb.tar.Z
- This is a compressed tar archive containing xmcd CD
- database files. To install, execute the following commands:
-
- cd /usr/lib/X11/xmcd/cddb
- zcat /usr/skunk/src/X11/xmcd-1.4/xmcd-cddb.tar.Z | tar xf -
-
- Substitute the "/usr/lib/X11/xmcd" with your actual Xmcd
- library directory.
-
-
- ABOUT The CDDB files
- --------------------
- The xmcd database files are organized into subdirectories,
- each is a separate category. Some of the files may be
- incorrectly categorized in this distribution, and I welcome
- suggestions.
-
- Some of the entries in this database were converted from
- a CD database file for the WorkMan utility by Steve Grimm
- (A CD audio player similar to xmcd, but designed for the
- XView/Open Look GUI environment). The rest were either
- entries from my CD collection or contributed by xmcd users.
- Since WorkMan does not support the concept of extended
- disc or track information text, the converted entries
- do not have such information. You are of course welcome
- to enhance any of these entries and send me updates.
-
- You may have a CD that has an entry in this CD database
- but yet xmcd would not automatically recognize it upon
- loading. This is likely to be caused by differences in
- track timings between the pressing you have and the one
- that the CDDB entry was created with. You use the "LINK"
- feature in xmcd to create multiple CDDB entries which are
- links to the same CDDB file. If you load a disc that
- xmcd does not recognize, try bringing up the CDDB window
- and press the LINK button. A menu will appear asking you
- to select the category. Then xmcd will try to create a
- list of CDDB entries in the specified category with the
- same number of tracks as the currently inserted disc.
- You choose the appropriate entry and xmcd will create a
- link for you. The next time you load this disc, xmcd
- will automatically recognize it and load the proper
- CDDB file.
-
- If the LINK feature does not yield an entry that matches
- your CD, then the database does not have an entry for it
- and you must enter the all the information and save it
- into the CDDB yourself.
-
- I hope you will find the database files useful.
-
- You are welcome to contribute to this CD database by using
- the "Send" feature found on xmcd version 1.2 and later.
- Alternatively, you can send CD database entries via
- Internet e-mail to xmcd-cddb@amb.org. The mail format
- should be one database file per mail message, with the
- Subject: line in the form of "cddb categ discid" (For
- example, "Subject: cddb rock 450bf41c").
-
- Please follow the following conventions when submitting
- entries to this database:
-
- 1. Use the "Artist / Disc Title" format. Note that
- artist name or group name comes first, and is separated
- from the disc title with a slash character. Please
- do not use other characters for this purpose. Also,
- put a space before and after the slash.
-
- 2. Capitalize the first letter of each word only. Do
- not use upper case for whole words unless it's
- absolutely necessary.
-
- 3. Submit to the appropriate category. Currently the
- following categories are recognized by the database
- server:
-
- blues (self explanatory)
- classical (self explanatory)
- country (self explanatory)
- data (ISO9660 and other data CDs)
- folk (self explanatory)
- jazz (self explanatory)
- newage (self explanatory)
- reggae (self explanatory)
- rock (incl. funk, soul, rap, pop, industrial, metal, etc.)
- soundtrack (movies, shows)
- misc (others that do not fit the above categories)
-
- 4. Do not send entries that are not completely filled-out
- (i.e., empty track titles, etc.).
-
- 5. Send an entry only after you verify that it isn't already
- in the database.
-
- If you discover that certain CDs are placed in the wrong
- category, please e-mail a correction request to ti@amb.org.
-
- This CD database is updated periodically (2 to 3 months)
- with new entries.
